Celebrating 250 Years

This Week in Friedberg History: February

February 8, 1755 was the 1st Lovefeast in Wachovia with bread since they now had a working mill. It was baked with half cornmeal and half flour. On Feb 9, 1781, several planters in the area were arrested by English Soldiers for being “enemies of the country” (the “country” refers to England). The identies of these planters were not mentioned in the diaries.

Feb 18, 1770 Ludolph Gottlieb Bachhof was introduced as the first minister. He and his wife began full time service to the Society; he was 51 years old. A Lovefeast was held in the afternoon. This Lovefeast was the first held at what was to become Friedberg.

February 19, 1786 the foundation stone was laid for the new church (2nd church) ; this church was built in what is now the graveyard. Then on Feb 25, 1823 the cornerstone was laid for the third church building. This building was located in what is now the courtyard between the Sanctuary and the Fellowship Hall. The cornerstone for this building is currently along the sidewalk in front of the Fellowship Hall.

The school was begun on Feb 27, 1770, with Bachhof as the teacher. The first day the little boys attended in the morning and afternoon. The older boys attended in the evening. The next day the school was held for little girls in the morning and the older girls in the afternoon. The school met for four days a week with the boys attending on Monday and Thursday. The girls attended on Tuesday and Friday. Br. Bachhof used Wednesdays and Saturdays for visitations.
